A Small Policy for
One Less Burden
Final expense insurance is a small, simplified life insurance policy sized specifically to cover funeral, burial, and other end-of-life costs — so your family isn't figuring out how to pay for a funeral in the same week they're grieving.
📅 Reviewed and updated for 2026
Most bills after a death can wait. A funeral bill can't — funeral homes typically expect payment in full before or shortly after the service, often before a larger life insurance policy or an estate has even been processed.
What final expense is actually built to solve
A larger life insurance policy — if one exists at all — can take weeks to process. Final expense insurance is sized and underwritten specifically to bridge that gap: a smaller death benefit, simplified approval, and a payout that reaches the family quickly enough to actually cover the bill that comes first. It's not meant to replace income or fund an estate — it's meant to make sure funeral costs don't become one more thing your family has to scramble for.
Final expense policies use simplified underwriting on purpose — the whole point is making coverage reachable at an age or health status where a standard life insurance policy might be difficult or expensive to qualify for. There are three general tiers, and final expense policies are usually written on the two easier ones.
Fully Underwritten
A medical exam and full health history — not typically used for final expense, but included here for comparison.
- Lowest cost per dollar of coverage if you're healthy
- Longer approval process
Simplified Issue
No medical exam, but a set of health questions on the application about conditions, medications, and hospitalizations.
- Approval often within days to about two weeks
- Common for final expense policies
- Costs somewhat more per dollar of coverage than fully underwritten
Guaranteed Issue
No medical exam and no health questions at all — acceptance is guaranteed within the policy's eligible age range, commonly around 50–85 depending on the carrier.
- Fastest approval — often immediate or near-immediate
- Smallest face amounts, highest cost per dollar of coverage
- Many policies include a graded death benefit for the first two years — see the FAQ below
Sized for the Bill, Not for a Lifestyle Replacement
Final expense coverage amounts are intentionally smaller than a standard life insurance policy — enough to cover a funeral and related costs, not enough to replace years of income. Premiums are level and locked in for life once approved; they never increase as you age.
Actual cost depends on your age, health, the carrier, and the coverage amount you select. Your advisor can walk through real numbers for your situation — this is educational information, not a quote.
You don't want to leave a bill behind
You'd rather a policy cover the cost directly than have your family figure out how to pay for a funeral out of pocket, or wait on a larger policy to process.
A health condition makes standard coverage hard to get
Guaranteed-issue and simplified-issue options exist specifically for situations where a fully underwritten policy isn't realistic or affordable.
You want a smaller, predictable premium
Final expense premiums are level for life and sized around a smaller benefit, which keeps the monthly cost manageable on a fixed income.
You want this settled now, not "someday"
Approval on guaranteed and simplified-issue policies is fast — often days, sometimes immediate — so this isn't something that has to sit on a to-do list for months.
